I think those roots need more roots off of them (secondary off of primary)

Do you think a mix of fluval stratum and soil + perlite will help?

Hmm. That’s a question for someone who has more experience in alternative soils. I’ve only just dipped my toe in.

Yes you can definitely put in soil, I would start with a 4inch pot (need to see more of the plant to say more) but if it was just from the root size 4 inch is good for now. Let it develop some roots and grow and go from there.
