I am propagating my rubber plant for the first time. I am propagating in water. How long does it generally take for roots to form? It’s been a little less than 2 weeks, and not seeing anything yet, but plant seems pretty happy based on leaves. Also, any tips are welcomed!

Hi there! Peperomia lover here 👋 😊 I’ve found these propagate much faster in soil than water propagations. If you want to try propagating it in soil, I’d recommend buying some Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder from a local nursery, hardware store, or Lowe’s/Home Depot/Ace Hardware. Gently pat the leaf dry, then the end of the cutting (the stem) in the rooting powder. Then gently stick the prop into soil. You can stick in right into the pot of the peperomia it came from if you’d like. Wait at least 2 days before watering it to allow the rooting powder to work. Otherwise, you’ll likely wash it away before it can do anything. Hope this helps!

I’ve propagated mine about 4 or 5 times now in water! One thing that can make a difference is your container… my understanding is that roots grow best in darkness, so an opaque container might help! Also, if you have a pothos that you can take a cutting of, they release lots of rooting hormone so that could speed it up! I’ve never needed to use the pothos with my peperomias, though!

Oh, I forgot to include that mine were quite successful with very little effort, and all adapted just fine when transitioning to soil or semi hydro later, which includes various types of soil and attention because I am a very inconsistent plant owner 😅

And I’ve found it should have roots within a month in water!

I’m propagating my rubber tree also! It was just growing straight up and falling over. I cut three parts and put in jars. So far two of the cuttings have roots growing. It’s been about 4 weeks. So stay patient and you’ll see roots! I think 4-6 weeks on average. I also change the water weekly and add a small amount of plant food. I use Happy Happy Houseplant plant food and my plants love it.
