# Advice needed! I rescued this Flaming Katy from a friend who was…

_Posted by TreeHugger on 2026-04-19_

Advice needed! I rescued this Flaming Katy from a friend who was ready to throw it out. It was way overwatered and the leaves were turning yellow and dropping. I cut off all the yellow leaves, repotted in some dry soil, and it’s been starting to see some great new growth (second picture), so I thought we were out of the woods. I looked this morning and realized the stem bases are rotting, basically black at this point. I was surprised because the new growth has been doing so well. How should I save it? Do I need to just chop and prop above the black to let it grow new roots?

You could cut the roots with sterilized scissors, then repot it again, this time, into a more clean and new pot
