# Hey guys! First time grower, unless you count growing grass in…

Hey guys!

First time grower, unless you count growing grass in elementary school. I’ve recently germinated some tomato seeds (Beefsteak and Italian Roma), and was wondering mainly what size pot I would need for both plants in a few weeks for transplant, as I rent and don’t have the rights to make a whole garden bed.

I’ve seen some results say 8”/8”, some say 12”/12” some say 16”/16” so I just don’t really know which is best.

I grew both of these varieties last year in a self watering grow pot (12 x 28). You \*can\* get away with a 12 x 12 pot, just know that they grow tall. (Both of mine hit over 8 feet!) You definitely want something to help brace them in a pot that size otherwise even the slightest breeze will tip them.

I would recommend 16 x 16 and some kind of stabilizing cages simple due to the size the grow to be.

The photo is my big boy the end of July and I didn’t get them planted until late May so this was less than 60 days of growth.

Some people use 5 gallon buckets. The big box hardware stores usually have food safe buckets.
