I rescued this umbrella plant from my work, it’s rather leggy and the stems have grown in weird directions. Previous owner had tied it to wooden dowels. I was thinking of chopping and propagating? Any tips?

these are SO easy to prop. anywhere you cut should trigger new growth points, and the pieces you cut can be water propped and planted

I’d say prop and plant, check and see if it needs repotted as well, I have one that I got a prop from my grandma, there are videos on YouTube how to prop it. That’s how I figured it out, but they grow well. And mine hasn’t needed a lot of light. I only water it once a week but if it’s dry I give it some as well. Make sure it has support and it’s still able to grow with that support, I think of it as if the rope is tied tight it’s like being choked for humans. So let it have a loose loop. Also you can wrap the longer trunks in a twist I’ve seen people do that, or you can leave them. My grandmas is just propped up against the wall and she has dowls to support it as well. I think definitely prop to help it get more growth, and check the root system to make sure it doesn’t need repotted and if it does then repot.

They grow tall and spindly when not getting sufficient light. I’ve seen them growing outside in the ground in full sun here in the tropics. They develop woody stems. Some are shaped to grow like small trees. My point is with sufficient light you can grow them without support structure. You may have to twist or braid stems or add structure if they grow fast and tin.

I recommend cutting back close to the pot leaving 1 foot tall stems to get rid of that mass. The newer growth will be controlled by you without needing to detangle. 😂 It will a challenge to tame the current plant without chopping. Water propagate the newest growth pieces where the growth hormones are the highest. Good luck. 🍀🪴
