# Bought a new elephant ear plant! I have family members who have these…

Bought a new elephant ear plant! I have family members who have these and keep it in part shade, they have theirs against their house so only getting direct sun for a short period of time and they look awesome. I got mine from a nursery and the owner said these plants like a lot of sun. So I put it in a pot in a very sunny spot facing west (gets a lot of sun in the afternoon). I think I also may have overwatered it at first while it was still in nursery pot.

The one big green leaf started getting lighter in color with spots, I moved it to a different area with not nearly as much light and repotted it and noticed the soil was super wet. I gave it new soil and let it dry out a bit. But it’s just looking worse and worse.

The leaf color has gotten super light, it has spots and the edges are brown and curling. Do you think it’ll survive? Is what I’m seeing from too much water or too much light or both?! Was not a cheap plant……

I think its a combo of sun scorching and over watering. A lot of alocasia do like sun, but they need to adjust to higher sun. And they like to be wet, until they decide to rot. It's unfortunately their perogative of temperamental. I wouldn't lose all hope though, even if you lose this leaf, just keep caring for it. And often they will grow back.

Ok thank you! This is the only leaf on the plant though, if it dies completely which it seems to be, do you think the plant could still survive? Should I chop the leaf at any point

Yup, I've had several come back from just a corm. As long as the care is good, and they are kept from rotting, they will generally come back. It can take awhile. I would leave that leaf for now, it still looks a bit green, so it's providing some energy at least
