# Hi I’m new to taking care of plants and I’m growing a bird of…

Hi I’m new to taking care of plants and I’m growing a bird of paradise from seed. I had to move it earlier due to a broken root that came out of the pot and according to the Dr. plants thing it’s experiencing transplant shock. I did prune it a little because the tip looked dead and that’s what Google said to do. It hasn’t really grown but it’s firm and seems decently rooted into the soil. My main question is what is that thing to on the side of it? Is that normal for them? It also hasn’t grown any leaves yet and it like grew the stalk a while ago.

I think the thing to the side of it looks like a new leaf it's trying to push out!

Thank you!!! I was really confused when I saw it!

that poor leaf is stuck in the sheath 😭 you can mist and gently pull, but this plant is so small i'd fear breaking it. it will free itself eventually, you don't have to touch it at all.

I didn’t know that was possible!

it definitely happens! it's more common in philodendrons, i've actually never seen this happen to a BOP before. your humidity is too low! you can mist regularly to help prevent this from happening again

I recently put a plastic cup with a hole in it on top and there is always condensation at the top of it!

The soil looks quite chunky and a bit funky. Maybe consider putting it in a smaller container with a well draining soil, i.e., with perlite, etc. perhaps look on Amazon for your specific plant’s soil type or better, Google the best soil for your plant and/or check a local nursery.
