Question: Why is that leaf turning brown?

Context: Browning leaf is the only sign of distress. No sign of pests. Watering and liquid fertilizing happens as often as the app suggests — or I snooze the task if the soil’s still wet. I used to have the plant on a shelf a few feet away from the window, where it started to droop and a few leaves died. It’s been much happier (and put out a new leaf) ever since I moved it to the sill.

\*I have not checked the roots recently. Maybe that’s the next move.

Humidity, maybe?

As good a guess as any. Apartment’s definitely on the dry side. Duly noted.

Same as mine’s🙂

Have you dealt with similar leaf browning? Did you get a humidifier? Did it help?

#### Sen replied on 2025-01-22

Nah, just take in stride

My alocasias tend to lose a leaf before they grow a new one. They can also go dormant and lose their leaves in winter but they grow back in the spring. I wouldn’t worry too much about it :)

Cool, thanks

Are you using distilled or tap water? It could also just be the last leaf fading away and a new one will come in like one commenter mentioned.

Tap water

#### LoquitoDeLasPlantas replied on 2025-01-22

Yeah that's probably what causing it, or part of the issue at least. Tap has additives that plants don't like. People say to let it sit for awhile so the chlorine can evaporate, but there's other stuff in there and some cities use a different type of chlorine. That type doesn't "gas off", it stays in the water

Definitely could be true. However all my plants get tap, and this is the only one with browning. Maybe it’s just more sensitive.

if I were you, I wouldn’t check the roots, especially until spring or summer. I’ve made that mistake in the past and completely shocked and killed my plant entirely. there’s a good chance that your plant is just going dormant, most of my alocasias are right now, but they’ve been starting to get some more growth the lighter it’s getting :)
