Are they bumps or spots? Can you see any bugs on the plant?

#### OGForestGreen replied on 2024-03-15

Spots. I inspected the entire plant thoroughly and couldn’t find any pests. I don’t recall the spots being there when I put the plant into water tbh. Unsure what the cause would be.

Scratched the spots a bit nothing comes off. Would you be able to scratch scales off?

Maybe a fungal disease like leaf spot? It usually come from high humidity and/or over watering.

Are you talking about the stems? If so those spots are completely normal… a lot of alocasias have them. I have them on several species

Also you can tell what scale is when you see it… it looks like a bug. Go look at pics on Google, these spots look nothing like it. The stem spots are just normal alocasia pigment

Amazing. Thank you. I didn’t notice the spots initially so I was afraid something was happening.

I chopped all the roots off these alocasias and put them into water so I was really nervous about the transition period. They’re doing well now minus the couple leaves that dropped!

You shouldn’t have chopped the roots off… this doesn’t look right, like the corm is gone that it grows from, did you remove that because if so you shouldn’t have. No need to remove soil roots when placing in water… some transition into water roots, and others will die and water roots will replace. You just change the water weekly and remove the roots that have turned to mush. It looks as though you removed the corm as well and if so if this plant dies you don’t be able to regrow it, it will be gone for good. But I can’t tell if the corm is missing honestly from looking at this pic, I just know because I had part of my alocasia Jacklyn’s corm break off in shipping, so I know I won’t be able to regrow it if it does ever die.

Good news is that those are indeed two water roots!!! So it’s going well it seems!

Oh actually I spot 3 water roots!!! One on the top I missed.

Yeah it was interesting hahah. I watched a bunch of videos on it first. One lady even did a comparison on with roots vs without roots that was quite interesting. It’s worth the watch on YouTube. Those started growing in after only a week in water too! But maybe it wouldn’t have dropped so many leaves if I didn’t cut the roots.

Here’s pics of my other two in water if you’re interested b

See this one has the corm thingy… does the other one, or does that type of alocasia just not have a longer one? Definitely I’ve found I usually only lose one of the small leaves if I leave the roots. I wouldn’t get rid of them honestly, I just let it stay in water long enough that the soil roots will die away if they don’t transition to water roots. I think you’ll find it’s the best option. As long as you change the water weekly removing those dead ones as you go. I think leaving it in water for like a month or a bit more, maybe even to two months… has given me the best transition to pon
