# My husband (who usually knows 0 about plants) just told me this…

_Posted by ToPlantHarmony on 2024-02-10_

My husband (who usually knows 0 about plants) just told me this doesn’t do anything and that I should just get a glass cabinet to put them in (like ok, don’t tell me when to have a good time buddy 😂).

But now I’m curious - do the bags over them help with humidity? Our house is 45-50% humidity usually, unless we get extreme cold temps and the furnace has to switch on. I thought this would help keep their humidity a bit higher than the ambient level in our house.

Yes! I use bags for my plants. Works fine. Just make sure to air them out every few days to avoid any fungus or mold from forming

I think it works, but you should agree with him so he gets you a plant cabinet 🤣

The bags can even make it 100% if you can seal them. This is the only way to acclimate nepenthes and it’s always had great success for me.

Might work a little, rubber bands around the bottom would really boost it though

As moisture from the plants and the soil evaporate, the plastic bags hangs onto it, so yes, it helps.

If you want something a bit more effective, but maybe you’re on a budget, you can get a wire shelving unit on Amazon for $86 and then a clear plastic cover that fits it for $35 (with coupon). Then, you can buy a humidistat and a tiny fan to control the humidity. The fan I like comes with a speed control knob and is $30. The humidistat I like is made by Ink Bird, and is $43. That will get you everything you need to keep the humidity in the range you want. All for $194. That’s really not a bad price for automation. The humidistat will power on your exhaust fan based on your upper settings and then it will turn it off when the humidity has lowered to your low settings. I didn’t mention a humidifier, because you don’t need one. Just lay out trays on the shelves, fill them with pebbles, and add water. The sitting water will evaporate and give you all the humidity you need. Without the fan and humidistat, the humidity will get too high.

When adding water to the trays, keep it low enough that the top layer of pebbles stay dry. By doing this, you can place your plant pots directly on top of the pebbles without any drip trays. Not filling water over the pebbles keeps your plants from sitting in water.

I currently have two of my three wire shelf units covered and maintaining humidity. I have them set at 72% humidity, but with a slight range where the fan kicks on at 75% and stops when it drops to 72%. The momentum of the dropping humidity actually reaches mid to upper 60’s before the humidity starts building up again.

Outlets from humidistat. “Work 2” turns on the exhaust fan. “Work 1” I don’t need, but would be for a humidifier.
