# I think my Pink Princess is losing its pink. I’ve had it for a few…

I think my Pink Princess is losing its pink. I’ve had it for a few years and it used to be much bigger but it got out of hand so I took some cuttings and started over. It’s in an East facing window and gets lots of light. Do PP’s just stop producing pink leaves after a while?

They shouldn't lose color. They usually need more light. But it could also be where you cut it back to, some nodes don't produce as much var

So there’s a couple factors here. First, some plants like PPP and monstera albo have essentially three layers of color on the leaves. There’s the base green from chlorophyll, but PPP also has a burgundy layer that green plants don’t have. And white variegation is the absence of pigment

PPP are known for having a solid burgundy layer covering all the green. That’s what causes the that dark purple-ish color and the variegation turns pink from having burgundy over white. But some PPP have genetics that cause the variegation to sometimes have a faint layer of green over the variegation. That causes the variegation to have that more subdued grey-ish pink color. I have one a lot like yours

Secondly, variegation can be predicted by the stem for pruning with the purpose of encouraging more color. PPP will have pink stripes on the stem. Philodendrons typically pop a new growth point from just above where the original leaf grew per node. So when you trim, try to pick a spot where the top node has a stripe of pink running through where the new growth point will start

Hopefully that wasn’t too much of an info dump! I’ll add some pics of mine. Please excuse how crusty they look 🤣 I have a huge collection and didn’t realize how badly my PPPs need a shower lol
