App ID says Philodendron of some type, I literally just picked this up from the store as it caught my eye- how do I help care for this guy? I’ve never seen the top layer of leaf peel off like paint before

Seconding a Brasil. Never seen the peeling either though. My personal guess would be recovery from a sunburn, but that’s not necessarily based in anything. Is that the only malady you’ve encountered with the plant?

Possibly, it was inside a grocery store not a nursery as such so not had the best treatment. I wiped the leaves with a damp cloth and the peeling revealed the pale stripe on the leaf, strange but may be sunburn as you said - not sure what else to look out for just yet in regards to ailments

This is the philodendron brazil. Keep in bright, indirect light (or under grow light). If you keep it in low light it will cause the variegation revert and it will tend to start new leaves with one color only.
Direct sun for long time may cause burn in the leaves. In spring and summer, you can fertilize with the same fertilizer of monstera plants, once or twice a month. Allow 2 to 3 inches of soil to dry on top before watering again. It likes humid air so you probably will want it in a bathroom or use humidifier. It likes high temperatures, as bove 60 F to 80's F. Hope that helps
