Curious about the potting substrates that folks have had the best (or worst) luck for keeping your Hoyas thriving? I have lots of starter size Hoyas that I’ve had a year or less. Pon and LECA seem spiff and I’ve been using them when potting up cuttings, but I see a lot of comments online from folks who eventually lose their Hoyas to root rot in pon or leca after months to years.

I mainly use coco chips, #3 perlite and charcoal but I’m introducing tree fern fiber and so far, I’m thoroughly impressed.
I just rooted 3 different cuttings of Hoya species in 10 days and my new Carrii cutting just threw me 6 new leaves and two growth points.
I’ll likely be throwing tree fern fiber into my mix at a larger percentage.

ETA; I grow in a greenhouse cabinet under grow lights, which definitely helps.

I’m new to hoyas starting last summer. I’ve tested different combinations of growing medium. I’ve found the similar chunky mixes work best in my high humidity environment. Most of the plants grow well in coco chips, perlite and a small amount of worm castings. I plan to add charcoal when I start repotting next months. I might have to try tree fern fiber as Amy suggested.

I really like the Hoya soil mix from rePotme.

I only have 2 Hoyas left in Pon and will be repotting them in to my chunky aroid mix. I don’t think they grow as well in the pon. I have several other Hoyas in my aroid mix and they do really well.

And a big yes to @twogreenthumbs reply. RePotme has great soil mixes.

Coco chips/coir. You can buy large compressed “bricks” for a decent price.

i use coco chunks or fir bark mixed with a bit of worm castings, pumice, and perlite. hoya seem to like the coco chunks best. i dislike semi-hydro and it would be my last option for epiphytes personally, as i know they require lots of airflow and leca stays wet consistently— i’d be worried about rot unless it was a freshly rooted cutting
