Origin

Tradescantia 'Nanouk' is a fairly new cultivar and it was actually created and cultivated in the Netherlands in 2017. It's prized for its pretty variegated leaves, which show vibrant colors in shades of purplish pink, green and creamy-gray.

It's also sometimes believed to be the easiest Tradescantia to look after as they're specifically cultivated to do well in an indoor environment, so can be a good introduction to this type of plant if you're worried that you won't be able to meet their care needs.

They have thicker, shorter stems than other Tradescantias and strong robust leaves, making them generally hardier.

Care

Tradescantias do best in bright, indirect light. Sunlight helps bring out the rich coloring in their foliage, so if you notice that yours seems to be losing its vibrancy, you may want to try moving it to a sunnier spot. However, be careful with exposing it to too much harsh, direct light. Like other many tropical plants, the leaves of the Tradescantia are delicate and can become burnt quite easily.

They also like their soil to be kept moist, but not overly wet, so will require fairly regular watering. Check the soil and if the top layer is dry, it's time to water again. Make sure it's planted in a well-draining soil in a pot with drainage holes so that any excess water has an outlet to escape from. No plant likes to drown! Also try not to get water on the leaves when watering - aim for the soil instead.

Your Tradescantia will also appreciate high humidity levels. You can boost the humidity around your plant by misting it regularly.

Other

The variegation on your Tradescantia 'Nanouk' will become more pronounced if the plant is placed in a bright spot - just don't place it somewhere too bright!

If you notice that your plant is losing its variegation and starting to turn green again, it may be a sign that it's not getting enough light. Place it somewhere brighter or you may want to supplement it with grow lights to really bring out its coloring.
