WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN

Small pests with hard 'shells' on the foliage most likely mean that your plant has an infestation of a type of insect known as Scales. They like feeding on the sap of plants, meaning they're not fussy about which types of plants they feed on.

Most of the time they're brought in by introducing an infected plant to your collection. This is why it's important to thoroughly check new plants for signs of pests when you first get them, and ideally you should quarantine them for a period of time. Once an infestation takes hold it can quickly spread and be difficult to get rid of.

SYMPTOMS OF SCALES

Signs to look out for include:

  • Small shell-like bumps on your plant, often on the underside of the leaves and / or on the stem. These are the outer shell of the Scale insect

  • Worsening of your plant's overall health

  • A sticky or waxy substance on the leaf surface - known as honeydew

Note that there are many different types of Scale insect, and so symptoms can differ slightly depending on the type your plant is affected by. For instance, not all Scales produce honeydew.
