All-purpose potting mix

A good all-purpose potting mix consists of several different ingredients to help your plant's roots to breathe, absorb water and nutrition.

Soil

The biggest part, around 60%, in the all-purpose potting mix is the soil, which often consists of clay, silt, peat moss and other organic matter.

Compost/nutrients

The compost helps the soil retain water, improve aeration, control the soil’s temperature, and it might also provide nutrients, depending on what organic waste was added. It’s important that the soil isn’t too nutritious, as this can damage the roots. This part should be about 15% of the mix.

Sand, Perlite & vermiculite

Improves your soil’s drainage and aeration. This should be about 25% of the mix.
