Why should you use acidic fertilizer for low pH plants?
The pH level of the soil can affect plants ability to absorb nutrients. Low pH plants, also known as acid-loving plants, struggle to absorb essential nutrients when the soil pH is too high (alkaline). By using acidic fertilizer, you can maintain a suitable soil pH to the optimal range for these plants, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.
How to use acidic fertilizer for low pH plants:
Choose the right acidic fertilizer: Look for a fertilizer specifically labeled for acid-loving plants or formulated to lower the pH of the soil. These fertilizers typically contain nutrients like sulfur or ammonium, which help to increase soil acidity.
Follow the instructions: Read and follow the instructions on the fertilizer package carefully. The instructions will guide you on the correct application rates and frequency based on the specific fertilizer you're using.
Apply the fertilizer: Water or spread the acidic fertilizer evenly around the base of the plants, keeping it a few inches away from the stems. Avoid over-applying the fertilizer, as it can harm the plants. Use a garden fork or a hand tool to lightly incorporate the fertilizer into the top layer of soil.
Water thoroughly: After applying the fertilizer, water the plants deeply to help the nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the plant roots. Adequate watering will also prevent the fertilizer from burning the plant roots.
